Organizing fireworks: a tempting idea, but not so simple. Have you tried it before, or come home empty-handed from the convenience store, too impressed with the number of fireworks available?
If you’re keen on getting started with fireworks on your own but aren’t sure where to start, here are some expert tips.
BUY AND PLAN FIRES
Rules to follow! First and foremost, check with your municipality: certain specific rules could surround the use of domestic fireworks. Is it allowed to settle in public spaces (streets, parks, playgrounds)? Do I need a permit? You will find out by contacting municipal authorities or your local fire department.
Don’t try to tinker! Don’t set up a firecracker with a roll of toilet paper and whatever you have in the pantry, and don’t try to alter the fireworks! Instead, encourage the local economy by going to a merchant near you. Some wholesalers sell it online.
Don’t count too much! The time has finally come to make the purchases! To make this dream come true, don’t be accompanied by your in-house accountant, who will make a point of reminding you that you are literally blazing tens of dollars. The key is to set a budget. You can put $ 250, $ 500, more, or less into it, because you can create a nice show with any budget, no matter how small. And be aware that the duration of the fires will not be proportional to the amount invested. “It can last 4 or 5 minutes, ten minutes, a whole evening”, it all depends on the choices in-store and your method of execution.
Time for choices! So that’s it, the budget is approved, you are in the store. What are you going to buy? The most expensive set on shelves, hoping it comes with a plan and full instructions? Would you rather make your own selection? Certainly, it’s best to plan the fires and buy a variety of parts.
And there is plenty of choice: Cobra P1, sparkling sparklers, Silvester Raketen, smoke grenades streaks, comets, and stars, besides the sound shell. Mortars, too, are popular. “They go up to 120, 150 feet and make great explosions,” “but it’s one shot.”
It’s clear: the more parts you have at a single detonation, the more manipulation will be. Therefore we suggest using multi-shot boxes, such as cakes, which make 25, 30 or even 100 firecrackers take off. They are spectacular and their price ranges from $ 20 to less than $ 70.
PREPARE THE SITE
Secure the site. Everyone is reminded of the importance of prudence. Check local bylaws to find out where you can settle. Choose a flat, open area for 30 meters all around. You should avoid being near cables, buildings, or vehicles. Keep any flammable or combustible material away from the firing area, such as the BBQ cylinder and the gasoline canister for the lawnmower. And if you handle pyrotechnics, stay away from alcohol.
Bury half the pieces well in the sand or earth and give them an angle before lighting them, according to the instructions. The fireworks are placed on a solid base like concrete slabs so that the fires can fly higher. We also want the pieces to follow the direction of the wind. Moreover, consider installing spectators on the other side, at least 20 meters away and with your back to the wind. Make sure you have a good amount of water right next to the parts you want to light.
How many fireworks? It is possible to direct fireworks to one person, who will light them one at a time, and who may take breaks. With two or three, it is easier to perform the choreography. If we do it continuously, it makes a better show. It depends on the kinds of parts if they have to be in the sand. It takes a bit of planning and being careful. “
We respect explosives, we listen to nature. Postpone your project if it winds over 40 km/h, or if it’s drought. The goal is to decorate the sky, not to bring in the firefighters.
Protect yourself. Make sure you have goggles, gloves, earplugs, and a helmet. Wear cotton clothes rather than synthetic materials that flare up easily. Also, be careful with your hands! Do not light a pyrotechnic in your hands, and do not hold a lit part.
If some parts do not start, too bad! Don’t lean over to check what’s going on. Everything that has not started will have to be drowned in order to avoid a somewhat late coming out of a pyrotechnic piece in the trash bag. Thirty minutes after the fires, clean the site: immerse the lit parts in water, whether they have burst or not, and arrange matches and lighters.
Attention, you, the young one! Almost half of those injured by fireworks are between 10 and 14 years old. They are often confident young people, who are not at their first fires. In addition, 40% of injuries are to the head. It makes sense to wear glasses and helmets!
