A hand mixer is a handheld tool that is used for mixing and blending. It comes with two metal beaters and several speeds. Depending on the model, you can also get other extra accessories like a whisk. Even if you don’t bake frequently, you’ll need this tool as it helps mix, blend, whip, and beat various foods.

What Is a Hand Mixer

Understanding a Hand Mixer

The term hand mixer is used to describe a tool that mixes ingredients. But in this modern age, this term refers to a portable electric mixing device that needs to be plugged into a power source. A hand mixer features a handle on top of a case that has a small motor and two metal beaters placed on one side. You can see the speed controls on top of the mixer, as well as the buttons that remove the beaters.

Also, note that some people use the term hand mixers to describe rotary non-electric egg beaters. These beaters were used long ago, but they were later replaced in the 1990s with electric versions.

Electric hand mixers are generally more powerful and efficient compared to non-electric egg beaters. They have constant power and require less effort and time to mix the ingredients. However, you can still get a rotary egg beater today, although it is mostly used by campers and those living in remote areas where there is no electricity. Many modern homes also have a vintage egg beater.

What Is a Hand Mixer Used for?

Well, from the name, you can tell that it is used for mixing. Individuals can whip cream, mix egg batter or cookie dough, and make salad dressing, icing, and other things using this tool. Many people also use it to whip boiled potatoes as it is an easy way of mashing potatoes.

A hand mixer is an essential tool for a homemaker. Even if you have a stand mixer, you may still need a hand mixer as it is convenient and suitable for small mixing and blending tasks.

The only drawback of this mixer is that it comes with a limitation. Note that its motor is not that powerful. So one can’t use it to mix hard doughs or for long periods. If you do a lot of baking, a stand mixer may be a better choice.

Also, note that a hand mixer doesn’t mix all ingredients. For instance, you can’t mix the chips of a chocolate chip using a hand mixer. Doing so could burn the motor. Again, fruits, nuts, and other hard substances will need a powerful model for mixing.

How Does a Hand Mixer Work?

How Does a Hand Mixer Work?

Well, you first have to plug it into a power source and attach the two balloon whisks. Then, place the ingredients and mixer in your bowl, and choose the mixing speed you want. You can then turn it on. The electric motor will rotate the electric whisk, which mixes, beats, and whips the ingredients. The device also incorporates air in your ingredients hence giving them a fluffier texture. When using a hand mixer, remember to move the bowl to ensure proper mixing.

How Much Does a Hand Mixer Cost?

Hand mixers are cheaper compared to stand mixers. You can get them for less than $100. The price difference is caused by the number of speeds a mixer has, its output, and extra accessories. Of course, a model with much power, several speed controls, and additional features is more expensive. Think about your needs when deciding which hand mixer to buy. For instance, if you need to mix bread ingredients, you should get a model with dough hooks.
